Florida was on track to hit 100,000 coronavirus cases on Monday, as the state continues to see a rise in new infections, according to a report.

The Sunshine State has already recorded 97,291 total cases with new daily cases eclipsing 3,000 for four consecutive days, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

The state saw nearly 3,500 additional cases of the virus Sunday, a dip from the record-breaking figures of 4,049 on Saturday and 3,822 on Friday.

But the rate of new infections continued to remain high, with nearly 12 percent of recent lab tests coming back positive.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis over the weekend urged Floridians to follow health guidelines but stopped short of ordering them to wear face masks to prevent the spread of the virus, news station WJXT reported.

Officials in some Florida cities made masks mandatory last week.

“We recommend everyone follow CDC guidance. I’ve not preempted local,” Desantis said. “You have to enforce that. Statewide penalties would be problematic. You have to trust people to make good decisions and not mandate this and mandate that.”
