While we may be seeing history being made for some animated films in Japanese theaters, let's not forget that Kyoto Animation's Violet Evergarden: The Movie continues to do well for the anime studio, even if the film has dropped off the box office top 10 in Japan. The official Twitter account for the franchise announced today that in Japan, Violet Evergarden: The Movie has made over 2.1 billion yen (US$20.23 million) since it opened in September 2020.

The tweet also revealed that the Taichi Ishidate's follow up to the Violet Evergarden TV anime has sold 1.45 million tickets across Japan. Violet Evergarden: The Movie is still the second highest-grossing Kyoto Animation-produced anime film following Naoko Yamada's A Silent Voice. Worldwide, Violet Evergarden is the 10th highest-grossing animated film of 2020 behind Digimon Adventure LAST EVOLUTION Kizuna, at US$21.13 million.

So far, Violet Evergarden: The Movie has been released in Australia and New Zealand, Hong Kong, South Korea, Vietnam, and some other south-east Asian countries (which have not publicly released their box office information). The film is set to be released at some point this year in North America.
