A 14-year-old Louisiana girl became Hurricane Laura’s first fatality when a wind-swept tree fell on her home, Gov. John Bel Edwards announced Thursday.

“Just before I came on with you, I got a report of our first fatality. A young 14-year-old girl in the Leesville area, a tree fell onto her home,” Edwards said on MSNBC, the Washington Examiner reported.

“I suspect that won’t be the last, although I pray we don’t have any more, but we know we have at least one fatality now in Louisiana,” added the governor, who did not identify the girl.

Laura made landfall near Cameron – a 400-person community about 115 miles south of Leesville — at 1 a.m. as a Category 4 storm packing winds of 150 mph. It has since weakened to a Category 2 storm.

“We are just now starting to get a sense of how serious this is,” Edwards said on MSNBC. “It appears that there is more structural damage from the wind and a little less flood damage than we had anticipated.”

More than 1.5 million people were under evacuation orders in Louisiana and Texas.

When Laura was a tropical storm, it killed at least 23 people in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
