Thinking to write cold blood, and at the same time a fascinating story about the confrontation between people and vampires the writer Steve Niles decided to build on it a full series of comics, but problematic negotiations with publishers at first discouraged him from this idea. And yet Niles continued to achieve what he wanted, and finally, he was lucky in the face of the publishing house “DW, whose editors eventually gave the go-ahead for the publication of 30 Days of Night, which showed completely unprecedented facets of vampire fury. Intrigued by Niles’s story, readers in a moment sold out the first edition of the series, and therefore the publishing house had to turn on the machines and continue printing, in order to satisfy the demand of the inspired audience, and then to the unexpectedly popular creation of the writer decided to turn none other than Sam Raimi, creator of the trilogy Evil Dead. Shooting later mostly expensive studio projects, Raimi was not going to leave in the past the horror on which his career was built, and he did everything necessary to achieve the right to the film adaptation of 30 Days of the Night, on which he volunteered to work as a producer and general creative coordinator. And due to the fact that the main action of history as intended initially takes place away from large settlements, the creators managed to reduce the production budget to reasonable limits, thereby ensuring financial security at the highest age limit, daring children from viewing.

Choosing a candidate for the position of director, Raimi decided to direct his attention on David Slade, who came to the big movie from the world of music videos and has already had time to mark a very sharp dramatic thriller Hard Candy.

The plot

The plot of the film takes us to the remote town of Barrow, located in the very north of Alaska. Only the most desperate and courageous people who were able to adapt to difficult living conditions, requiring maximum patience and desire to conquer uninhabited, dangerous territories, live here. However, when the cycle of a month’s night comes, most locals try to leave this place in order to avoid depression caused by endless cold and excessively long darkness, which is able to cloud the mind.

The lover of Sheriff Eben Oleson (Josh Hartnett) Stella (Melissa Georga) also decided not to stay longer. But by an unfortunate coincidence, the girl can not get on the flight and she has to stay in the town, which partly can not but please Eben who is facing a very difficult task. Arresting a stranger who appeared within Barrow, cut phone lines, and killed dogs, the sheriff realizes that it was only an intro to something bigger and much more terrible. And when the local power plant deprives the citizens of the light, Eben decides to take the matter into his own hands and urges people not to go out once again, because with the disappearance of electricity on the streets there are terrible monsters in human disguise and they have the desire to taste warm blood.

It should be mentioned here that the movie garnered a lot of popularity in New Zealand partly because it was also directed in this country. At some point, New Zealand casino promotions were planned to be a sponsor or an “investor” in the movie, and therefore they were considering including a scene where the main characters sat around a table playing card games for money. Seems pretty much original, right? In a horror movie where everyone is fighting for their survival, but in their opinion, it would give the movie additional flair. But it was never done in the film.

As for the plot, unable to leave the city, Eben and the remaining survivors begin a long and very dangerous game of hide-and-seek with vampires who have incredible power and are not going to leave Barrow until dawn. However, despite the best efforts of the survivors, the situation is heating up day by day and the chances of survival are becoming too elusive.

The sense of hopelessness is evident in this film literally from the first minutes, when a part of the city dwellers is going to leave the inhabited areas, in order to spend a month away from the cold and darkness, able to drive crazy even the most resilient man. Watching the streets empty and the sun gradually tending to sunset, you begin to feel the chill. And it does not matter how many degrees in the room where you watch the film, because the excellent atmosphere so simply does not retreat, but on the contrary penetrates into the very depths of consciousness, forcing to experience all the same as Sheriff Oleson goes through.

At the same time, the director leaves enough time for us to meet not only the title characters in the face of the same Eben and Stella but also other secondary characters who will survive with the sheriff for thirty days of hopeless night. Learning the true essence of the inhabitants of Barrow, we begin to realize that they were in this town for a reason and even in the face of the mortal danger they try to hold on to each other, and not to think exclusively about their own well-being.

What it’s really about

This philosophy of survival has a special meaning and teaches us to be strong members of society, while the status of individualism, loved by many modern people, often does not exactly lead to anything good. And the best way to understand this is not only bloody scenes of action but also calm, thoughtful episodes, during which people have the opportunity to catch their breath and communicate with each other in a quiet, measured form, which earlier in constant employment was difficult to do. And since the heroes every now and then have to hide in the darkness, they have plenty of time to talk. But it should be noted that the film is not given out artificially drawn and meditative. The creators tried to fill the dialogues with emotional meaning and in time added to the timekeeping rapid action, marked by unfortunate victims, without which it is impossible to do.

The recognition for 30 Days of the Night brought vampires, very different from their other on-screen relatives, who lost the ability to frighten. Under the guidance of David Slade, the monsters turn into a real beastly pack, which nevertheless does not lose the rudimentary mind, trying to act smoothly and once again not to cross the road to its leader Marlow in a spectacular performance by Danny Huston. Communicating in a specially designed language, vampires are given out by some ancient relics, who have preserved their seeking philosophy and acting according to the indestructible laws of the past, which the average person has nothing to oppose. But at the same time, the rules and foundations partly tie vampires’ hands, which in the end can be used. So people still have chances of survival.

As a result, I want to say that 30 Days of Night is an example of a high-quality and moderately frightening horror about vampires, which deserves special attention.
