#FEATURE: Team Seoul is the Team 7 For A New Generation

God of High School

The unlikely trio of Jin Mori, Yoo Mira, and Han Daewi has proven to be a formidable force as they continue to climb the ranks of The God of High School tournament. Their rivals-to-friends-back-to-rivals-back-to-friends relationship has done a lot to make them not only better competitors as individuals, but it has allowed them to trust in each other more than if they were just thrown together for the heck of it. While we haven’t seen the full growth of Team Seoul in Gat Obeu Hai Seukul, their dynamic and how they are competitive teammates with each other is reminiscent of another famous team that made their television debut nearly 20 years ago.

Unfamiliar allies can be a helpful thing when you want to become better at what you’re trying to achieve. When Naruto was paired up with Sakura and Sasuke to form Team 7, it was a decision that helped him grow not only as a person through the years, but made him better at fighting by giving him people to go up against that won’t let him waver or slack off like he tended to try and do. Naruto already wanted to be on the same level as Sasuke, so putting him in a team with him would force him to see Sasuke’s progression constantly and make it so he had to also put in the same amount of effort to try and match him.

God of High School

The adage that “iron sharpens iron” is certainly something that various anime will use to make their main characters better. Naruto did this with Team 7 and a wide swath of other characters, and that’s what The God of High School is attempting to do with Team Seoul. Given that each member of Team Seoul had been invited to the tournament meant that they had to be a formidable martial artist in their respected skillset. With the strange ways they all meet, it adds to the story that they are a team nobody expected to be able to mesh as well as they have.

In order for each member of the team to push the others to be better, they have to make each teammate into a rival. Team 7 certainly does this as Naruto sees Sakura and Sasuke as rivals that he needs to surpass in order to be better, and vice-versa. Team Seoul also relies on this method as Jin Mori consistently brings up wanting to fight the other two members because he knows it will make not only him better, but Yoo Mira and Han Daewi, as well. While everything is fine now, and they’ve been able to grow their trust in one another, getting to that point was a little tricky with certain fights they had.

Naruto

The preliminary semi-finals match between Mira and Daewi — an unnecessarily one-sided beatdown — had all the makings to put a huge strain on this trio’s relationship with one another. Things seemed to be okay for the three of them after they saved Mira from a poor marriage choice, but this brutal display almost ripped it apart. Unbeknownst to Mori at the time, Daewi was in a heightened state of desperation to save his friend who was on his deathbed. That desperation going against Mori’s determination led to a fight that made the two of them learn a lot about each other in the finals of the preliminaries.

With teams that are made up like this of rivals who become friends, eventually, there will come a time where you’ll have to fight one another because of a clash of ideals, to prove who is better, or even sometimes just for fun. That was of course personified with Team 7 and the fights between Naruto and Sasuke throughout Naruto and Naruto Shippuden. The fights between those two and Naruto’s eventual chasing after Sasuke to try and bring his friend back became a lofty goal that pushed Naruto to consistently get better, while Sasuke also chased more and more power to make himself better. Sakura also knew she needed to push herself to new heights in order to catch up to her Team 7 teammates. Even when one person can be considered the best of a trio, that doesn’t mean the other two will stop their pursuit of improvement.

God of High School

As The God of High School tournament has shifted into the team format, Team Seoul’s continued pursuit of victory has shown that they embody these themes of pushing your teammates to get better. It’s helped that their trust in one another has certainly improved from the preliminaries up to this point, but it’s that belief in each other that also has allowed them to see that they haven’t reached the peak of their improvement yet. That’s an aspect that will help this team see that the sky can be the limit for how good they can be.

While we haven’t seen what the conclusion for Team Seoul will be, hopefully, it won’t end as emotionally as the original split of Team 7 in Naruto. With how long it’s been since Naruto debuted on TV, it’s possible that the energetic Jin Mori, the stoic Han Daewi, and the spunky Yoo Mira are someone’s first trio like this and could lead a new set of viewers to believe in this trio, just as fans did nearly 20 years ago when they first encountered Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke.

How far do you think Team Seoul will go in The God of High School tournament? Can they make it to the end and stick together, or will they face a similar situation as Team 7 and be forced to break up? Let us know down in the comments below!
