“FEATURE: More Tough As Nails Anime Women Like SPY x FAMILY's Yor Forger”

A great man once stated “I love a woman who can kick my ass,” and the history of anime proudly attests that he is not alone. Anime is replete with women who could reduce you to your chemical structure simply by looking at you, with this season's SPY x FAMILY offering the murder-happy Yor Forger as a prime example. The distance between Yor’s precise, gleeful acts of violence and the utter disaster that is the rest of her life serves as a fine variation on the archetype, mitigating her terrifying presence with moments of goofiness or familial love. But there are as many badass, no-nonsense anime heroines as there are stars in the sky, and today I’d like to celebrate as many as I can. If you enjoy that thrill of fear as Yor aims a needle at your throat or feel a rush of elation at a show that celebrates your own inner Yor Forger, this article is for you!

First off, if you measure the murderosity of your heroines purely by kill count, Attack on Titan’s Mikasa Ackerman has to be near the top of the list. Mikasa is a being of precision and destruction, brandishing her blades with an unerring look of grim determination. Additionally, her relationship with Eren Yaeger frequently trends toward that divine sweet spot of “wildly competent woman must save her dumb boyfriend from his own bad decisions.” Mikasa is a murderous gem, and it seems director Tetsuro Araki was a fan of her style, as his follow-up, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress featured the equally proficient Mumei. Clearly a man of refined instincts.

Leaning even further into the “murder woman plus teddy bear man” dynamic, we turn to the acclaimed Black Lagoon, and its breakout star Revy. Wielding twin pistols and a terrible attitude, Revi is a natural disaster in human form, obliterating all foes in her path with a grin and a snarl. If you’re looking for a heroine who truly loves destruction, Revi stands second to none.  Beyond that, her relationship with her crewmate Rock exemplifies the thrills and chills of romancing a grizzly bear. Sure, she’s both threatened and actually attempted to kill him, but she also seems to get jealous when other girls flirt with him — so they have that going for them, I guess.

Dismantling your opponents doesn’t necessarily require physical violence — or at least, the traditional sort can always benefit from a dash of psychological violence on top. As such, I’d be remiss not to mention Bakemonogatari’s Senjougahara, a woman who can reduce your ego to ashes even as she plants a staple right through your cheek. From the first episode of Bakemonogatari, Senjougahara’s terror and allure are both apparent and full — and in a rarity for this archetype, she actually ends up in a relationship with its protagonist Araragi by the end of its second arc. Don’t worry about that dampening her brutality, though; she is if anything even more condescending as Araragi’s girlfriend, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

We all know the expression “you look so adorable I just want to eat you up,” but what if that wasn’t an idle threat? Does that do anything for you? If so, look no further than The Eccentric Family starring the enigmatic and voracious Benten. Benten shares a strange relationship with protagonist Yasaburo in that they clearly possess a mutual attraction, but also Benten literally ate Yasaburou’s father (in his tanuki form). Relationships between humans and tanukis are strained at the best of times, but when the human in question has achieved tengu powers and consistently makes far-from-idle threats about how tasty you look, the situation is even more fraught. Still, one look in Benten’s eyes and it’s hard not to forgive her (for trying to eat you).

I’m running out of time to celebrate murderladies, so these last few suggestions will be something of a lightning round. First off, if you’re looking for universes where basically every man, woman, and child is attempting to kill you, you could do far worse than JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. All of the show’s seasons have their own highlights, but in terms of badass ladies, top characters would include Battle Tendency’s Lisa Lisa, Diamond is Unbreakable’s Yukako, and the entire main cast of Stone Ocean. Kill La Kill boasts a similarly murder-happy cast, with Satsuki Kiryuin winning the “most likely to grind you beneath her heel” superlative at its high-octane academy. And though most of these heroines don’t follow through on their plentiful threats, there is always the rare alternative. If that is what you’re looking for, the infamous School Days is happy to oblige.

On the whole, there are few mediums that can measure up to anime in terms of heroines who can, and likely will, destroy you. There’s just a certain je ne sais quoi in playing out that “they asked for no pickles” meme, a unique thrill to being held in arms that, with a slight increase in tension, could shatter your spine effortlessly. I am happy to offer solidarity with those who seek such refined comforts and hope you’ve found a thrill worth pursuing among my selections. After all, what’s the point of love without the spice of fatal injury?
