#FEATURE: How Could Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury's Wild Season 1 Finale Effect Season 2?

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury’s first season ended with a bang. Well, to be precise, it ended with a smack. After two wild episodes that featured assassination attempts, terrorism, mother-approved murders, and double crosses, the series was turned completely on its head. One character had a surprising impact in the last few episodes and that was Suletta. With how her relationship with Miorine was affected and where this will put her with the rest of her friends, let’s examine which direction she could go in for Season 2 and some of the other consequences coming out of the Season 1 finale.

Throughout The Witch from Mercury there’s been a dichotomy between the adults intertwined in a lot of politics and Suletta and her group who are not necessarily as in-the-know when it comes to the inner workings of what’s actually going on. This is certainly a problem given Suletta’s naivete, since that’s led to her being taken advantage of by multiple groups who want to use her Gundam for their own means. Her naivete and social anxiety also became a cause for concern in the last few episodes.

With Suletta in a vulnerable position thinking she’s on the outs when it comes to Miorine and a dangerous situation happening at Plant Quetta, there was another opportunity for certain parties to take advantage of her — this party, of course, being her mother. Prospera was shady for most of this series, although she’s seemed as if she does care for Suletta at times. Yet, it’s not a Gundam series if you’re a masked character and not at least somewhat shady. In the finale episode, she does save Suletta from being attacked by forces from the Dawn of Fold by also telling her that, hey, sometimes you’ve gotta murder people to save yourself. Since Suletta hasn’t had the kind of societal training other people have, she takes this to heart in not the best of ways.

This all comes to a head at the end when Suletta saves Miorine and her father from being killed by smashing the attacker with Aerial. Suletta seems unfazed by what she’s just done and Miorine is understandably horrified that a bloodied Suletta is calling after her like she didn’t just cause a guy’s dismembered arm to fly right by Miorine’s head. It’s quite the cliffhanger to create such a giant chasm in their relationship and leaves viewers very perplexed.

After seeing such a horrified response about something she thought was the right thing to do, where exactly does Suletta go from here? Things are obviously not going to be great between her and Miorine and that relationship, for at least a bit of time, is going to be severed. I certainly wouldn’t think the series would split them up forever, given how much of a driving force the two of them were throughout most of the first season, they were also a fan-favorite pairing. I don’t think we have a situation where Suletta becomes a full-fledged villain either.

With a split coming, it would be easy to see Suletta going back in line with her mom more and Miorine potentially being more with her dad after seeing him almost assassinated. Plus, there’s a good chance that the GUND-ARM medical technology Miorine has been trying to push could be used as a way to help her dad. There’s also a bit of underlying beef between these two parental figures, which could cause even more drama for Suletta and Miorine moving forward. If the show is adamant about keeping the two of them apart for a bit, this would certainly be one way to do that.

Suletta is likely going to be caught in the crossfire of whatever political struggles are happening behind the scenes. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see her mom use her and Aerial as leverage in any kind of bargaining she needs to do or to straight up intimidate anybody that would stand in her way. By potentially being separated from Miorine, Suletta is not going to have much of a choice in this and will most likely have to team up with her mom or at least do her bidding. I’m sure we’ll also see some sort of internal struggle when it comes to Suletta on whether or not she’s actually doing the right thing, if her mom is doing the right thing, and how she handles fights after casually murdering an enemy in the finale episode.

It’d be hard to imagine that the series could go back to the school lifestyle of the earlier parts of Season 1 given how there was just an assassination attempt, multiple back stabbings, and actual fighting happening. So, we’re probably heading more into the style of Gundam the franchise is more known for — being at a state of war with all of the characters having to figure out what to do in that state. We’re certainly going to get more political drama throughout, since I’m sure there’s going to be more moving and shaking between all of these capitalistic groups.

The Witch from Mercury’s first season finale was done in such a way that it keeps the interest in the series up and makes you very ready for what’s to come next. I’m excited to see how Suletta changes next season and how she’s going to try and repair her relationship with Miorine after crushing an enemy in front of her. It’s going to be quite the struggle, but I think Suletta will eventually be able to accomplish that goal and the two of them will team up to hopefully put a stop to all of the political machinations happening.
