#FBI probing claims that Texas AG Ken Paxton committed bribery

The FBI is probing accusations that Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton used his position to benefit a wealthy donor, sources told the Associated Press.

The allegations of wrongdoing were lodged against Paxton by seven of his now-former staffers in late September.

Paxton’s former executives, in a letter to their director of human resources, have accused him of bribery, abuse of office and other crimes to benefit Austin real estate developer Nate Paul, sources familiar with the federal investigation told AP.

The full nature of the allegations are unclear, but they reportedly revolve around Paxton’s hiring of an outside lawyer to assist Paul, who had claimed the FBI improperly searched his home and offices last year.

In 2018, the real estate developer donated $25,000 to Paxton’s reelection campaign.

Paxton’s accusers have either resigned, been put on leave or been fired since coming forward with the allegations against their boss.

In a Tuesday statement to the Austin American-Stateman, Paxton said, “after reviewing the claims made by former employees of this office, their allegations are overblown, based upon assumptions, and to a large degree misrepresent the facts.”

The attorney general, a Republican, is already facing legal trouble. He was indicted back in 2015 on federal charges over alleged securities fraud.
