#Father-to-be Mike Trout plans to play Angels season despite unease

Mike Trout intends to play this season, but the best player in the game admitted he’s nervous about what lies ahead — especially since the Angels’ star and his wife Jessica are expecting their first child.

“Honestly, I still don’t feel comfortable with the baby coming,’’ Trout said Friday on a Zoom call, according to reports. “There’s a lot of things on my mind. I’m trying to be the safest and most cautious way to get through the season. It’s going to be tough.’’

A number of players have already opted out of the upcoming 60-game season due to the coronavirus pandemic, including Washington’s Ryan Zimmerman and Colorado’s Ian Desmond.

So far, no one on the Mets or Yankees has decided not to play, but a lot could change throughout the league — and the world — by the time the regular season is scheduled to start later this month.

“We’re playing it by ear,’’ the 28-year-old Trout said. “I think the biggest thing is this is our first child. I’ve got to be there. If I test positive, I can’t see the baby for 14 days. We would be upset. I’ve got to keep Jess safe. I’ve got to keep the baby safe… I try to talk to my wife every night about this. I know I’m risking myself. I could meet somebody and get this virus. That’s the last thing I want to do.”

Despite those concerns, Trout is still planning on being with the team throughout the year.

“I love baseball,’’ Trout said of his decision. “I love playing this game. We all want to play. It’s going to come down to how safe we are going to be. If there’s an outbreak or something happens these next few weeks, we’ve got to reconsider.”

And he certainly wouldn’t be the only one to do so.

“I’ve got to do right by my family,’’ Trout said. “A lot of guys have questions. It’s a tough, crazy situation in this country and in the world. Nobody has the answers.’’
