#Don’t Look Up Trailer #2 Drops a Planet-Killing Comet on a World Ready to Party

“Based on real events that haven’t happened,” greets us with the new trailer for Don’t Look Up, showing us what our scientists are truly up against, pleading with the the world to understand the gravity of the situation. Writer/director Adam McKay didn’t need to go 500 years into the the future to show us his Idiocracy, he’s working with the current players on the board.

The official synopsis from Netflix reads, ” Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence), an astronomy grad student, and her professor Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) make an astounding discovery of a comet orbiting within the solar system. The problem – it’s on a direct collision course with Earth. The other problem? No one really seems to care. Turns out warning mankind about a planet-killer the size of Mount Everest is an inconvenient fact to navigate. With the help of Dr. Oglethorpe (Rob Morgan), Kate and Randall embark on a media tour that takes them from the office of an indifferent President Orlean (Meryl Streep) and her sycophantic son and Chief of Staff, Jason (Jonah Hill), to the airwaves of The Daily Rip, an upbeat morning show hosted by Brie (Cate Blanchett) and Jack (Tyler Perry). With only six months until the comet makes impact, managing the 24-hour news cycle and gaining the attention of the social media obsessed public before it’s too late proves shockingly comical – what will it take to get the world to just look up?!”

Don't Look Up Poster

If you take a gander at Adam McKay’s Twitter, you can see he is coupling his passions of filmmaking and climate change. The film looks like it might be the spoonful of sugar and medicine combo the writer and director and the cast, as well, have been championing on their social media platforms. While he did retweet Leonardo DiCaprio’s tweet of the latest Don’t Look Up trailer, it followed an extensive commentary on the COP26 Coalition, the UK-based civil society coalition of groups and individuals mobilizing around climate justice during COP26.

McKay’s career began with a slew of comedies that are classics today. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Step Brothers, The Other Guys, setting the stage for what we could expect from the writer. However, his new slot in the industry might just be the sweet spot, allowing McKay to continue to bring the laughs along with delivering a message. With Vice, and The Big Short paving the way, and the upcoming Don’t Look Up, might we look forward to more learning as we laugh? I’m in!

Don’t Look Up hits select theaters December 10 2021, and will be available on Netflix December 24 2021.
