#Fake cop car blasts through ‘Cannonball Run’ NYC-to-LA record

An Audi rigged to look like a cop car blew through the Cannonball Run record, making the trip from Los Angeles to New York in just 25 hours and 39 minutes.

Drivers Arne Toman and Doug Tabbutt — they drove the 2,816 miles in 27 hours and 25 minutes last November — credit COVID-19 and their incognito wheels with their breakneck speed.

The duo took advantage of much quieter roadways during lockdown to cross the country at speeds of 175 miles an hour in a modified 2016 Audi S6 that looked like a Ford Taurus Police Interceptor from far away, Road and Track reported.

Toman refashioned his Audi with a 45-gallon trunk-mounted fuel cell and a reshaped front grille with a decoy badge similar to the front of the Interceptor, the car magazine reported.

The men left the Red Ball Garage in New York City — the traditional Cannonball starting point— at 6 p.m. so they could cover most of the Midwest in the dark.

Toman claims he and his driving partner managed to leave Manhattan in just 4 minutes and 30 seconds — and stopped only five times to refuel, which took all of 31 minutes, the auto magazine reported.

The Audi averaged a speed of 100 mph, including the fuel stops, and hit a high of 175 mph. A network of scouts helped the team avoid police, Road and Track reported.

In June, Fred Ashmore set a solo record of 25 hours and 55 minutes in a rented Ford Mustang GT stuffed with fuel tanks.
