#Failed candidates have ‘Survivor’ reunion at DNC — without de Blasio

A group of seven failed Democratic presidential candidates held what resembled a “Survivor” reunion of losers before Joe Biden accepted the party’s presidential nomination — but New York Mayor Bill de Blasio was still left out of the fun.

The virtual reunion was broadcast Thursday on the final night of the Democratic National Convention ahead of Biden’s speech. Losers joshed each other with memories from the campaign trail.

Notably absent were de Blasio, whose bid failed to gain traction, and Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who is reviled by mainstream Democrats for her views on foreign policy.

“You can think of this sort of like ‘Survivor’ on the out-interviews of all the people that got voted off the island,” New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker said.

“Bernie — Bernie don’t you laugh because I got a question for you: Like, why does my girlfriend like you more than she likes me?” Booker added.

Former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke, universal basic income advocate Andrew Yang, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg all joined.

Buttigieg, who won the Iowa primary delegate count, spoke of meeting Biden there.

“Remember the steak fry when we were waiting to go on? It worked out where I was there the same time he was,” Buttigieg said, recalling a heartwarming story about Biden pointing out “somebody who’d gone through a family tragedy.”

Klobuchar said she was touched by a phone call from Biden after she gave a speech on the Senate floor that she was certain nobody watched.

“I thought I wonder if my mom was even watching this on C-Span,” Klobuchar said. “And at that moment, the cellphone rings, and I actually thought maybe my mom was watching it. And you know what, it was Joe Biden — and that kind of goes to not only his kindness for calling me and being a mentor, but it also goes to how much he cares about our government.”

The losers were effusive in their praise for Biden.

“In Joe Biden, you have a human being who is empathetic, who is honest, who is decent,” Sanders gushed.

“The magic of Joe Biden is that everything he goes becomes the new reasonable,” Yang said, endorsing Biden’s pick of fellow failed candidate Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) as his running mate.

“If he comes with an ambitious plan to address climate change, all of a sudden everyone’s going to follow his lead,” Yang said. “You can see with him choosing Kamala too. He wants to build the best team. Let’s do it together.”

One loser was elevated above the rest. Bloomberg, who spent $188 million vying against Biden, got the prime slot just before the nominee’s acceptance speech. He did not join the “Survivor” reunion.
