#The Boy and the Heron Passes US$25 Million in Second Week

Hayao Miyazaki‘s new film The Boy and the Heron (or How Do You Live?) has grossed over 3.6 billion yen, or around US$25.48 million, in Japan since its debut on July 14.

In comparison, 2013’s The Wind Rises, which was the venerable director’s then-final film, made 2.85 billion yen in its second week. However, The Boy and the Heron‘s second weekend (July 21 to 23) gross of 831 million yen (~US$5.88 million) marks a notable drop from the Studio Ghibli title’s first-four-day gross of 2.14 billion yen (~US$15.48 million).

On the Japanese weekend box office ranking, The Boy and the Heron fell to second place due to the arrival of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One. Other anime theatrical releases that placed on the ranking include Idolish7 Live 4bit: Beyond The Period at sixth place, The Quintessential Quintuplets~ at eighth, and The First Slam Dunk, which premiered in December 2022, at 10th.

The First Slam Dunk supplanted Makoto Shinkai‘s Suzume to become Japan’s 14th highest-grossing movie last week and has now made over 14.9 million yen (~US$105.4 million). It is set to end its run on August 31. Right in front of the basketball movie in 13th place is Miyazaki’s 2008 film Ponyo, which has a gross of 15.5 billion yen (~US$109.66 million).
