#Ex-Wagner star Cam Gill will take field for Super Bowl 2021

Staten Island will be in the house for Super Bowl 2021 Sunday at Raymond James Stadium.

Former Wagner College linebacker Cam Gill, 23, is a member of the Buccaneers — playing primarily on special teams in this, his rookie year. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Bucs after the 2020 draft and played in 15 games this season, including the postseason, recording six tackles, four solo.

Gill, a native of Georgia, is the Northeast Conference’s all-time sack leader. He won consecutive NEC Defensive Player of the Year and All-America honors.

“Playing at Wagner, I actually played special teams all four years, freshman through senior year,” Gill said in an interview earlier this the season. “That helped me out with making the team [the Bucs]. Being a young guy, an undrafted rookie, I had to find my role on special teams, and I feel like that background at Wagner helped me with that.”

This is second consecutive year a former Wagner player is on a Super Bowl roster. Former Wagner offensive lineman Greg Senat was a member of the Chiefs last season.

PATs will be extra nerve-wracking

It may not be wise for fans to take a kitchen or bathroom break when the Chiefs and Bucs kickers are lining up for extra points. Between the two of them this season, they’ve missed 11.

Kansas City kicker Harrison Butker has a better success rate on field goals — 92.6 percent (25-of-27) — than he does on PATs — 88.9 percent (48-of-54). Tampa Bay’s Ryan Succop is 28-of-31 on field goals (90.3 percent) and 52-of-57 on PATs (91.2 percent).

All season, just three kickers missed five or more extra points, and two of them are be playing in this game (Vikings kicker Dan Bailey is the other).

If this game comes down to the kickers, it wouldn’t be a surprise considering this is the 30-year anniversary of Buffalo’s Scott Norwood famously pushing his potential game-winning 47-yard field goal attempt wide right to secure a Giants victory. That game took place in the same city the Super Bowl is being played Sunday.

In the four Super Bowls that have been played in Tampa, kickers have made just 75 percent of their kicks (9-of-12) with the misses coming from 41, 44 and 47 yards.

DeGuglielmo lands college job

Dave DeGuglielmo, brought in during the Week 11 bye last season by Giants coach Joe Judge as a consultant then immediately moved in as the offensive line coach after Judge fired Marc Colombo, has landed a new job.

The much-traveled DeGuglielmo was hired as the offensive line coach at Louisiana Tech. There was some discussion of DeGuglielmo returning to the Giants in 2021, but a deal was not worked out and he moved on. Judge is looking to fill the offensive line opening on his staff.

NFL: No parties for Bucs, Chiefs

Citing the league’s coronavirus protocols, the NFL is prohibiting the Bucs and Chiefs from conducting a traditional postgame Super Bowl party for players, coaches and members of the organization. The Chiefs, who arrived to Tampa on Saturday, plan to leave immediately after the game and return to Kansas City.

Win or lose, Super Bowl participants traditionally have postgame parties at the team hotel or other venues in the city hosting the game.

Hunt’s widow keeps streak going

Norma Hunt, the widow of Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt and the mother of team chairman and CEO Clark Hunt, hasn’t missed a Super Bowl. And the 82-year-old Hunt won’t miss this one.

“My mother’s very excited to be headed back to the Super Bowl,” Clark Hunt told the Associated Press. “Last year was a big one for her. It was her 54th but the first one she had been to in 50 years that the Chiefs were participating, so that was special.”

Norma Hunt is believed to be one of just four people who’ve attended every Super Bowl.

“To be honest, the streak was never all that important to me, but it was always important to Lamar,” Norma Hunt told the Kansas City Star last year. “He loved statistics and streaks, and it was fun for him to tell people I had seen every Super Bowl.’’

Business as usual for Tampa

The Buccaneers spent their week leading up to Super Bowl LV working at their AdvenHealth Training Center, just as they did every other week during the regular season. Coach Bruce Arians, like normal for a home game, brought the Bucs to a team hotel Saturday night in advance of the game.
