Derek Chauvin — the ex-Minneapolis cop charged in the murder of George Floyd — made his first court appearance Tuesday on tax evasion charges.

Chauvin, 44, appeared remotely in Washington County District Court for the brief hearing, during which Judge Sheridan Hawley set conditions for his pretrial release and scheduled his next hearing for Oct. 30, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

The former cop and his estranged wife Kellie Chauvin were each charged in July of six counts of aiding and abetting taxes or filing fraudulent returns beginning in 2014 and three counts of failing to file tax returns from 2016 through 2018.

The couple is accused of underreporting $464,433 in joint income and owing a total of $21,853 in taxes. They owe a total of $37,868, which includes interest and penalties.

Kellie filed for divorce shortly after her husband was charged with murder and manslaughter in the May 25 death of Floyd.

Derek is being held on $1.25 million bail in his criminal case and is unlikely to be released.

However, if he were, he would have to make all future court appearance in his tax evasion case and live a law-abiding life, according to the conditions set forth by Hawley.

Derek is accused of killing Floyd by kneeling on his neck for nearly eight minutes.

Three other officers, Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao, were also charged in Floyd’s death.

All four, who have been fired, will appear in court Friday in the Floyd case.

Last month, a lawyer for Lane claimed his client was innocent — because Floyd “killed himself.”
