With NVIDIA recently announcing its RTX 4000 range of GPUs, we knew competition would be coming from AMD. We probably didn’t expect it to be this impressive, though. AMD’s new graphics cards promise big performance gains, and yet, they manage to significantly undercut their NVIDIA rivals in pricing.

AMD has announced the first two Radeon graphics cards belonging to the RDNA 3 range — the RX 7900 XTX, and the RX 7900 XT. One will cost you $1,000, and the other will cost you $900, so they’re much more reasonably priced than the $1,600 GeForce RTX 4090, taking a similar approach to Intel except with actually powerful GPUs, and will be even better if the new AMD GPUs are actually able to stack up.

From the initial announcement, though, they look promising. For the RX 7900 XTX, AMD is promising up to a 1.7x improvement in native 4K gaming (compared to the RX 6950 XT) in games such as Cyberpunk 2077. That GPU comes with 96 compute units and 96 ray accelerators, runs at 2,300 MHz, and has 24GB of GDDR6 VRAM. The RX 7900 XT, though, comes with 84 compute units and 84 ray accelerators instead. It runs at a lower 2,000 MHz and comes with (still quite reasonable) 20GB of VRAM.

One aspect where they do better than NVIDIA is power consumption. The RX 7900 XTX consumes 355W of power from your power supply, while the RX 7900 XT sips 300W instead. If they actually perform anything like the RTX 4090, we’ll be getting amazing performance per watt in addition to being a great bang for your buck.

We’ll see these GPUs on store shelves starting on December 13th.
