#Eric Adams praises cat-lover Curtis Sliwa in mayoral debate

Democrat Eric Adams and Republican Curtis Sliwa took a moment to praise each other during a sometimes rough and tumble mayoral debate Tuesday night.

Asked by ABC-7 moderator Bill Ritter to pick something each likes about the other candidate Adams lauded Sliwa for being a cat lover and animal rights activist.

Sllwa said he admired Adams for his becoming a vegan and promoting the healthy lifestyle.

“I take my hat off to Curtis, what he’s doing with cats,” said Adams, the Brooklyn borough president and clear front runner in the race for mayor.

“I think we need to be humane to all living beings and that includes our animals. As a person who believes it’s important that we show compassion to each other and our animals, I commend him for what he’s doing around cats.”

Sliwa and his wife, Nancy Regula, have 15 cats in their tiny Upper West Side apartment.

For his part, Sliwa, the Guardian Angels founder who noted he’s known Adams for decades before they became political combatants, said his opponent’s vegan diet has been an example for others to eat healthy.

“His promotion of the vegan way of life to avoid serious medical issues has probably already helped dozens, maybe hundreds, maybe thousands of people,” Sliwa said.

“I applaud you for that because I have seen the results of people who end up dying, suffering and in pain because they got caught with all with all kind of problems: diabetes, high blood pressure, hypertension.”

Sliwa said he hoped to be a vegan himself and quipped that he’s at “the vegetarian stage.”

Adams converted to a vegan diet to treat his Type 2 diabetes.

The one-hour debate was co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters, Univision 41 Nueva York, the Hispanic Federation and the NAACP. It is the second and final general election debate in the race for City Hall.

Election Day is Nov. 2. New Yorkers can also still vote early Wednesday through Sunday.
