#Eric Adams, Jumaane Williams hail Labor Day ‘success’ — despite 6-year-old shot

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and city Public Advocate Jumaane Williams echoed Mayor Bill de Blasio Tuesday in praising the Labor Day Weekend as an overall success — despite a quintuple shooting that left a 6-year-old boy with a shattered femur.

“Those idiots that created the violent situation that shot a 6-year-old child should not be the narrative,” said Adams, a former NYPD cop and presumptive 2021 mayoral candidate, in a Brooklyn press briefing.

Maxwell Cesc-Dinho, his mom and three others were wounded when an alleged teen gangbanger opened fire from a stolen car at a crowd of J’Ouvert revelers near Crown Street and Nostrand Avenue around 3 a.m. Monday — one of 22 shooting incidents that left 28 people struck citywide over the holiday weekend.

But Adams, Williams and other local leaders hailed the work of the city’s Crisis Management System, a network of anti-violence advocates who try to mediate potential street beefs at a grassroots level before they explode into shootings.

“We heard the gunshots where five people were shot. Let’s hear about the gunshots that we didn’t hear because they [CMS] were out there,” Adams said, employing a turn of phrase worthy of Yogi Berra.

Williams similarly decried the quintuple shooting, but didn’t let it get in the way of classifying the weekend as a “success” on the whole.

“It is terrible that five people were shot,” he said. “There needs to be accountability for that, condemnation for that cowardly act.

“But it is also [a] success,” Williams continued. “There was much less gun violence than on most summer weekends, much less a holiday. I want people to see that. It was one incident. It was a mass shooting, but it was one incident.”

Last year, there were 19 shot in 16 incidents — just two-thirds of the gunplay seen this year, according to NYPD data.

Williams, like Adams, praised the work that CMS did, calling for them to take a greater role in communities struggling with gun violence.

“Police by themselves cannot solve this problem. How much more of a police presence would you have wanted in these communities?” he asked. “It was filled, you couldn’t fit any more in!

“Yes, there was one incident where five people were shot. Everybody hates that,” he continued. “But we have to put out the narrative of what happened the rest of the weekend, and how this co-production worked.”

Mayor de Blasio earlier Tuesday characterized the bloody three-day stretch as an overall “peaceful weekend.”
