#Epic Games Ends Employees Time-Off Policy
During the COVID-19 outbreak, the established framework of work was changed. Most of the jobs were conducted online and remotely. The gaming industry can be quite loaded when it comes to schedules and work. This too saw a change during the pandemic, shifting to shorter workweeks or more time off. Eidos Montreal had recently announced their shift to a four-day workweek. Other studios such as Young Horses have also made similar moves.

  • During the pandemic, Epic Games had introduced a new policy that allowed employees to take every alternative Friday off. Just a few days back, Epic has decided to roll back this policy, which was imagined to only be temporary by the studio.
  • Employees are unhappy with the removal of this policy and have been asking Epic to reconsider the decision. As Bloomberg reports, internal Slack channels were filled with pleas from employees toward the publisher to reconsider.
  • Surveys say that 90% of employees had found this policy “extremely beneficial”. A similar percentage of employees wanted the policy to become a standard one.

Epic has stated its reason for rolling back the policy. The Chief Operating Officer Daniel Vogel had told staff in an email

“Right now, we are seeing lots of Fridays off for deep work, and lots of people who must work Fridays anyways. This meant that many people were not benefiting from this policy equally.”

Employees have claimed that Epic did not slack off when the policy was in place. They were consistent in usual updates for Fortnite every two weeks. This was in a scenario where many studios were pushing back several projects. With such consistent performance where employees have delivered what is required of them, they are unable to understand the rationale behind this move.

“The perceived gain simply can’t compare to the actual evidence of what we have already achieved over the past 18 months, which is more than anyone else in the industry could ever hope to achieve — all with alternating Fridays off.”
