Grand Canyon University’s entire men’s basketball team has been instructed to quarantine after six people within the program tested positive for coronavirus, the school announced Wednesday.

After four players and two staff members tested positive for the virus, the team was told to quarantine at a designated residence hall on campus for the next two weeks, a press release from the university said.

Although 12 players on the team tested negative, they were still included in the quarantine order. Two additional staff members tested positive as well and will remain at home for two weeks in accordance with GCU policy.

The university’s press release also noted that the four players who tested positive were asymptomatic and were tested before being allowed to participate in voluntary workouts on campus.

“The University has been working diligently over the last few months to ensure that proper protocols and procedures are in place and, as a result, we were able to quickly address the positive COVID-19 cases,” GCU Interim Vice President of Athletics Jamie Boggs said in an email to the Arizona Republic.

“The safety of our student-athletes, staff and the GCU community is of the highest priority and we will continue to follow local and national guidelines, work closely with our team doctor and campus health center, and revise procedures as needed to ensure the continued safety of our student-athletes and the GCU community.”

Additionally, GCU reported that it sanitized its weight room, sports medicine clinic, basketball offices and the players’ dorms in wake of the spread.
