#Emmy nominations 2020 snubs: ‘Better Call Saul,’ Reese Witherspoon, more

The 2020 Emmy nominations were announced on Tuesday morning (check out the full list here), and along with them, some surprising snubs.

HBO’s “Watchmen” led the pack with a whopping 26 nominations, while “The Mandalorian” on Disney racked up an unexpected 15 nods — never underestimate the force of Baby Yoda.

But there were also some shows fans say didn’t get the recognition they deserved. Here’s a look at the biggest snubs of the year.

“Better Call Saul” and star Rhea Seehorn

While AMC’s “Breaking Bad” spinoff “Better Call Saul” got a nod for Best Drama series, its stars Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seehorn were ignored. It’s always a strange choice to nominate a show without acknowledging that actors make it — and social media was not having it.

“F - - K THE TELEVISION ACADEMY HOW THE F - - K DO YOU SNUB RHEA SEEHORN FOR FIVE EXCELLENT F - - KING SEASONS OF TELEVISION. ALSO JUSTICE FOR BOB ODENKIRK THIS WAS HIS FINEST WORK,” one irate fan wrote.

“Not nominating Rhea Seehorn definitely falls under the ‘You Had One Job’ category of utter failure,” said another.

Reese Witherspoon

You might forget that Witherspoon co-stars opposite Jennifer Aniston in the Apple TV drama “The Morning Show.” The Emmys sure did. While Aniston got a nod for Best Actress, Drama, Witherspoon was left out. To add insult to injury, she was also ignored for Hulu’s “Little Fires Everywhere” (which earned an Outstanding Limited Series nod) and HBO’s “Big Little Lies” (co-stars Laura Dern and Meryl Streep both got Best Supporting Actress, Drama, nods). Ouch.

“What We Do in the Shadows”

While the FX vampire comedy was a nice surprise for the Best Comedy category, none of its talented cast members — Matt Berry, Kayvan Novak, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillén — were nominated. Once again, the Emmys are offering congratulations to a show that apparently has no cast.

Merritt Wever

Wever’s excellent Netflix drama “Unbelievable” — following female detectives investigating a rape case — earned a nomination in the Outstanding Limited Series category, but Wever was ignored for Best Actress, Limited Series or TV Movie.” The show wouldn’t have been the powerhouse it was without Weaver’s emotionally charged performance.

“Normal People”

Newcomer Paul Mescal earned a nod for his starring role as Connell in Hulu’s limited series, which is based on the hit Sally Rooney novel about a young, Irish not-quite-official couple who take years to navigate their relationship. But the show itself did not earn a nod, and neither did Mescal’s co-star, fellow newcomer Daisy Edgar-Jones.

“Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet”

Comedy was a competitive category this year, filled with returning heavy hitters like “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Schitt’s Creek,” which is taking its swan song. Nevertheless, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” star and creator Rob McElhenney’s workplace sitcom about a video game studio was not only the best show on Apple TV in its debut year, it was also one of the best comedies of the year.

“Never Have I Ever”

Netflix did better than ever this year, racking up a staggering 160 nominations. But some of them were for tired material like “Stranger Things.” Meanwhile, fresh, new coming-of-age comedy — and creator Mindy Kaling’s best work of her career — was ignored. “Never Have I Ever” was also full of stars who could have been nominated in the comedy acting categories, such as young newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan or Poorna Jagannathan. It’s been renewed for a Season 2, so hopefully its time will come.

The 72nd Annual Primetime Emmys, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will air Sunday, Sept. 20  at 8 p.m. on ABC.
