Awards season isn’t over just yet. The 2021 Billboard Music Awards is this weekend.

And if it feels like last year’s were just yesterday, you’re not far off: The coronavirus pandemic pushed 2020’s awards to October.

But now, one of music’s biggest nights — which gives fans the power to vote for their picks — is back on track, with a vengeance. The Weeknd, who was infamously snubbed by the Grammys and vowed to boycott them forever, is expected to make a big showing at this year’s awards. The Super Bowl powerhouse is a finalist in a whopping 16 categories.

Perhaps he’ll even debut a new face for the occasion.

Also on the docket: Korean pop kings BTS. The South Korean septet became the first K-pop act to be nominated for a Grammy last year. Though they lost the category, their history-making performance only fueled the hype for future American awards shows, including the Billboards. They’ll be debuting their latest song, “Butter.”

Here’s everything you need to know about the 2021 Billboard Music Awards.

When and where are the awards?

The awards show will be on May 23 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles at 8 p.m. EST/5 p.m. PST.

How are the awards chosen?

This one works a little differently, in that there aren’t exactly nominations from some contentious academy, but rather musicians’ commercial success. The Billboard Music Awards are based on the chart period of March 21, 2020, through April 3, 2021.
