#Elon Musk, Bill Gates offer to give away bitcoin in hacked tweets

Twitter followers of Bill Gates and Elon Musk speculated that their accounts been hacked on Wednesday, as a series of tweets dangled a bitcoin giveaway that looked too good to be true.

“Feeling greatful, doubling all payments sent to my BTC address!,” the tweet said in a since-deleted tweet, misspelling the word grateful. “You send $1,000, I send back $2,000! Only doing this for the next 30 minutes.”

It was preceded by another quickly deleted tweet from Musk which said he was “feeling generous because of Covid-19.”

Gates’ account tweeted a similar message.

“Everyone is asking me to give back, and now is the time,” the since-deleted tweet read. “I am doubling all payments sent to my BTC address for the next 30 minutes.”

A Twitter spokesperson said the social network was looking into the tweets. A Tesla spokesperson didn’t respond to The Post’s request for comment.

Tesla’s stock is up more than 200 percent in recent months, propelling Musk into the upper echelon of the world’s richest people. Musk is now the 8th richest man in the world, according to Forbes, with a net worth of $70.8 billion.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey last year had his account taken over by a group of hackers calling themselves #ChucklingHella. The account immediately went on to tweet out the N-word in all caps before adding: “intel is there’s a bomb at Twitter HQ.”
