#Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Sells Over 5 Million Tickets in Japan in a 1 Month and a Half

While Hideaki Anno’s Evangelion journey may be over, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time is still going strong at the Japanese box office, crossing over the 5 million tickets sold mark 42 days after release, a new record for the franchise. Toei, who distributes the film in Japan alongside Toho, also reported that the film had reached 7.79 billion (US$71.23 million) yen at the Japanese box office as of May 18, an increase of 373 million yen from the week before.

As of May 18, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 has brought in 7,799,314,050 yen (US$71,233,209) on the back of 5.08 million tickets sold. Last week, the final Evangelion film surpassed the worldwide box office gross of Evangelion: 3.0, which stands at US$67,282,623 and will continue to climb as the film gets released around the world. It is currently the highest-grossing film in Japan for 2021.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0 finally opened in Japan after being delayed twice due to the coronavirus pandemic on March 8, breaking franchise records on the first day and eventually becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise in Japan in less than a month, then the highest-grossing worldwide in 35 days. It is the longest film in the franchise (not including compilations or special screenings). There is no word yet on an international release of the film.
