“Prior to the pandemic, we were faced with record ridership, and knew we needed innovative ways to manage crowding on our trains,” LIRR President Phil Eng said at a press conference in Jamaica, Queens.
“This is something we’ve been working on for the past year, but now as we strive to help bring back New York’s economy, this information is more vital than ever.”
The revamped app assigns color-coded crowding levels to each car, allowing riders to board the less-crowded carriages.
“With this, you can see where you’re standing on the platform, where the train is coming in and which car is expected to be in front of you,” Eng said.
“Within 10, 15 seconds, as people enter the car, you will see [the color] change.”
The tech works on 90 percent of the LIRR’s trains — on the M7 model, crowding data is based on the train’s weight. The M9 model uses infrared senses above train doors.
Eng declined to say whether the feature would expand to Metro-North and city subways and buses.
