#iPhone 12 might not come with power adapter, report says

In addition to nixing the power adapter, a renowned analyst previously reported Apple may stop including free earbuds with new iPhones, too.

Buyers of the upcoming iPhone 12 might find the box emptier than they were expecting, with Apple rumored to be eliminating the charger that normally comes in the box, according to a renowned analyst.

TFI Securities’ Ming-Chi Kuo says that Apple is trying to shave costs by reducing the size of its packaging, which will reduce shipping costs. The bulkiest item in the iPhone packaging, besides the phone itself, is the 18W power adapter.

Buyers of the new iPhone will still receive a charging cable in the box, but no power brick to plug it into the wall. Apple will reportedly remedy this by selling a new, separate 20W adapter.

Last month, Kuo reported that Apple will also stop including a complimentary pair of earbuds in the iPhone 12’s packaging in order to increase demand for its already mega-popular AirPods wireless headphones.

Apple has included a free pair of headphones in every box since it released the very first iPhone in 2007.

Without free headphones, customers will either need to buy an adapter to connect their old 3.5 mm headphones into the iPhone — which abandoned the headphone jack several years ago — or will need to shell out for Bluetooth headphones.

Apple previously included a Lightning to 3.5 mm jack adapter in the box when it got rid of the headphone jack, but stopped giving it away for free when it released the iPhone XS line in 2018. The adapter sells for $9 on Apple’s website.

Apple reportedly plans to release four new iPhone models later this year, which will serve as the successors to the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro family of devices.

The next iPhones are rumored to have 5G hardware, which will allow the phones to access a network that promises faster internet and quicker response times than LTE.
