#Yankees hoping Luke Voit will be back ‘sometime in May’

Aaron Boone said Saturday Luke Voit is expected back “hopefully sometime in May. We’ll see how the next weeks unfold.”

Voit underwent surgery Monday to repair a partially torn meniscus in his left knee that had bothered him throughout spring training.

According to Boone, the “surgery went as expected” and the first baseman is rehabbing on a stationary bike.

If the process goes smoothly, Voit will be shut down from baseball activities for another two weeks or so and could return in a “4-6 week scenario,” which would put him in early May.

Jay Bruce made his second straight start at first base Saturday and had a key two-run single in the Yankees’ 5-3 win over the Blue Jays. Mike Tauchman continues to work at the position in case he’s needed there.

Tauchman said he’s been a full-time outfielder since high school, though he played some first base while in summer ball in college.

Still, he’s up for the challenge.

“It was kind of in play before Luke’s injury and become more on the frontburner since,’’ Tauchman said. “I can only play four positions, so I might as well play all four. If that’s something that can lead to a couple more at-bats, it’s something I want to do. So far so good. We’ll see what happens.”

The toughest part of the transition is adjusting to the game speed at first base instead of the outfield.

Tauchman, who didn’t seem assured of a roster spot until late in the spring and had been the subject of trade talk, entered the game on Opening Day in the bottom of the ninth as a pinch runner and promptly stole second and third base before being thrown out at the plate on a DJ LeMahieu grounder.

He plans on running more this year, as pitchers are more preoccupied with how they are dealing with hitters than in keeping runners close.

“The emphasis on pitching on velocity and strikeouts causes some pitchers to be a little lax, not only holding runners on, but with their time to the plate,’’ Tauchman said. “Now, more than in years past, there are opportunities out there to steal bases at a pretty high percentage clip.”
