#Johnny Cash Live Album From 1968 Getting First Official Release

Days before Johnny Cash released his iconic live album At Folsom Prison in 1968, he performed in San Francisco at a venue run by members of Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead. His band included June Carter Cash, Luther Perkins, Marshall Grant, and W.S. Holland. That show was recorded by the Dead’s sound person Owsley “Bear” Stanley, and this year, it’s getting a long-belated official release.

At the Carousel Ballroom, April 24, 1968 is coming out on vinyl and CD on September 24 (via Owsley Stanley Foundation/Renew Records/BMG/Legacy Recordings). The tracklist includes two Bob Dylan covers: “Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright” and “One Too Many Mornings.” Check out the album’s recording of “Going to Memphis” below (via Rolling Stone).

The release features essays in the liner notes from Cash’s son John Carter Cash, Stanley’s son Starfinder Stanley, Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead.
