A Week 1 win over the Buccaneers may have costly repercussions for the Super Bowl-hopeful Saints.

Sources have told NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero that two-time All-Pro wide receiver Michael Thomas suffered a “high-ankle injury” during Sunday’s game.

The Ohio State product had a quiet afternoon and reeled in three of five targets for 17 yards.

As of Monday, Thomas “believes he can play through [the injury],” but high-ankle sprains can linger for weeks and any absence would be a crushing blow to the Saints.

The 27-year-old receiver has been an integral part of head coach Sean Payton’s pass-heavy offense since joining the team as a second-round pick in 2016. He has been named to three Pro Bowl teams, has two first-team All-Pro nominations, has led the league in receiving yards in back-to-back years (2018, 2019) and was awarded the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year distinction in 2019.

Pelissero did not speak to the severity of the injury, but added that the Saints’ Week 2 matchup on the road against the Raiders will take place next Monday, which would give the ailing wideout an additional day to recover.
