An Alabama doctor was driving 138 mph in a high-performance Audi when he crashed along a service road, killing a medical student in his car, prosecutors said.

Dr. Jonathan Nakhla, a 36-year-old neurosurgeon, has been charged with manslaughter in an Aug. 1 wreck in Mobile that killed passenger Samantha Alison Thomas, a 24-year-old medical student, Al.com reports.

Police investigators said they found Nakhla’s Audi in a ditch after he swerved while driving “at an extreme high rate of speed” to avoid another vehicle and ran off West I-65 Service Road, an affidavit states.

Thomas was killed in the wreck, while Nakhla was taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, the website reports.

Details of how fast prosecutors believe Nakhla, who was arrested Monday, was driving at the time in a 45 mph zone were revealed during a bond hearing Wednesday.

One of Nakhla’s attorneys, Dennis Knizley, insisted that the speed data from the neurosurgeon’s car was unreliable since it had rolled over before coming to coming to rest in a ditch.

Police have also said Nakhla was driving with a blood alcohol level above the state’s legal limit of 0.08 percent, but prosecutors are still waiting on final results, WKRG reports.

Knizley told the station he believes Nakhla was driving an Audi Spyder, which starts at $182,100 for 2020 models and can get up to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, according to Audi’s website.

A judge set bond Wednesday at $200,000 for Nakhla. He later posted that amount and was released from jail after agreeing not to leave Alabama without permission and surrendering his passport, WKRG reports.

Thomas, a student at the University of South Alabama’s College of Medicine, was a family friend of Nakhla, a married father of two, Knizley told WALA.

Nakhla has since been placed on leave from Mobile Infirmary, Knizley said.

“We are truly saddened by this terrible accident and the tragic loss of this young lady’s life,” hospital officials told the station in a statement. “We trust our authorities to thoroughly investigate this event and take all appropriate actions they deem necessary. Our sincerest condolences to the family for their loss.”

Knizley, meanwhile, said he expects Nakhla to ultimately plead not guilty.

“It was certainly a very unfortunate accident … [but] It was simply that, an accident,” Knizley told Al.com. “He’ll be maintaining his innocence throughout the proceeding.”
