#Director Makoto Shinkai Expresses His "Frustration" on Demon Slayer: Mugen Train Beating Your Name's Box Office

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba THE MOVIE Mugen Train

After the reports came out today that Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba THE MOVIE Mugen Train anime film had overtaken Your Name's lifetime gross at the Japanese box office, which was the biggest anime film of the year, and arguable of the last decade, director Makoto Shinkai went to Twitter to express both his "frustration" and joy of Demon Slayer: Mugen Train overtaking Your Name's box office takings.

"What? Already! LOL!

Though I feel frustrated, it's the nature of a healthy entertainment industry that records are constantly being beaten, right? I will do my best every day so I can at least make good films."

The Your Name director commented on the first-weekend success of Demon Slayer back in October, asking "how is this possible at the Japanese box office?" With every weekend Demon Slayer: Mugen Train has played in, the anime film has brought in over 1 billion yen (US$9.57 million), making it a runaway success, and in Shinkai's own words "A huge accomplishment!"

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba THE MOVIE Mugen Train opened in Japanese cinemas on October 16 and had the best opening weekend in Japanese cinema history, climbing to (as of writing) the third highest-grossing film of all time in Japan. You can read our review of the film here. The Ufotable-produced anime film continues to adapt the manga series by Koyoharu Gotouge, which saw a TV anime series adaptation in 2019. The film is scheduled to be released in the west in early 2021. The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba TV anime series streamed on Crunchyroll as it aired.
