The Devils are reportedly going across the Hudson River for their next head coach.

New Jersey is expected to hire New York Rangers assistant Lindy Ruff to be their next bench boss, according to former goaltender Kevin Weekes of NHL Network.

It is not yet known whether Ruff will continue to serve on the Rangers staff when the NHL tries to restart its season next month.

The Rangers said they were not able to comment because no official announcement from the Devils has been made.

NHL Network also reported that the Devils will make Tom Fitzgerald the full-time general manager. Fitzgerald worked under an interim label after the Devils canned Ray Shero last season following a dismal start to the season.

Ruff, who primarily worked with Rangers defensemen, brings nearly two decades of head-coaching experience to a young Devils team.

The 60-year-old Ruff led the Sabres to the Stanley Cup final in 1998-1999 season, in which they lost to the Dallas Stars in six games. He coached Buffalo for 15 seasons. After that, he had a four-year stint with the Dallas Stars before becoming a Rangers assistant coach in 2017.

Ruff has a 736-554 (78 ties and 125 overtime losses) record for a .561 win percentage in his 19-year head-coaching career.

He’s replacing interim coach Alain Nesreddine, who had a 19-16 mark with eight overtime losses in 43 games. Nasreddine replaced John Hynes, who was fired in December. Hynes, who is now coaching the Nashville Predators, was 150-159 with 45 overtime losses in his four-plus years with the team.

The Devils won’t be a part of the league’s restart after having a 28-29-12 record when the season was shut down in March because of the coronavirus.
