“#Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, Lupin the 3rd: The First Plus More Anime Films Eligible For Academy Awards”
For this year's Academy Awards, 27 animated featured films are battling it out for the usual five nomination slots for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, up from the 13 that were eligible just a few days ago. The updated list now includes anime films such as Earwig and the Witch and Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train, but also Pixar’s Soul, a top contender for the award.
The total list of anime films now eligible for the 93rd Academy Awards for the Best Animated Feature include:
- Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train
- Earwig and the Witch
- Lupin the 3rd: The First
- ON-GAKU: Our Sound
- Ride Your Wave
- A Whisker Away
Due to COVID-19, eligibility rules for this year's Academy Awards have been changed, with films that are uploaded to the Academy Screening Room within 60 days of release (whether the release is theatrical or digital) eligible for nomination. The 60 days rule doesn't mention which side of the release window, meaning films that are set to be released in late February are eligible to be nominated.
Academy voters have to watch at least 50% of a category to vote in it. With the Best Animated Feature having 27 films eligible, voters will have to watch a minimum of 14 films to cast their ballot. Voters have until March 10 to cast their ballots with nominations being announced around March 15.
Good luck to all the anime films eligible!
