It seems once the train leaves the station, it won't stop, as Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba THE MOVIE Mugen Train once again slayed records with the second-biggest weekend in Japanese box office history (behind the anime film's own opening weekend last week), bringing the film past 10 billion yen (US$95 million) in just 10 days, making it the fastest film to do so in history.

The official Twitter account for Demon Slayer announced that Demon Slayer: Mugen Train made 1.594 billion yen (US$15.2 million) on Saturday with 1.12 million people watching the film, and on Sunday grossed 1.540 billion yen (US$14.6 million) on the admission of 1.16 million people, making the total for the weekend coming to 3.135 billion yen (US$29.8 million) with 2.28 million people going to the cinema to watch Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. The film now holds the records for the best weekend, the second-best weekend, and the best second weekend at the Japanese box office.

This brings the grand total gross of Demon Slayer: Mugen Train to 10.7 billion yen (US$102.02 million) on the 10th day of release with 7.98 million people seen the anime film, or roughly the population of Sierra Leone. This makes Demon Slayer: Mugen Train the fastest film in Japanese box office history to reach this level – one that most films dream to even get to – dethroning Spirited Away's 19-year place at number one in just half the time, who reached 10 billion yen (US$95 million) in 25 days. For comparison, Your Name reached 10 billion yen in 28 days, and Weathering With You reached it in 34 days last year.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba THE MOVIE Mugen Train

With no real competition in Japanese theaters until Stand by Me Doraemon 2 on November 20, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train has a clear path to take over the Japanese box office. Oricon is predicting that Demon Slayer: Mugen Train may even overtake Spirited Away's final gross of 30.8 billion yen (US$293.6 million).

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba THE MOVIE Mugen Train opened in Japanese cinemas on October 16 and had the best opening weekend in Japanese cinema history. You can read our review of the film here. The Ufotable-produced anime film continues to adapt the manga series by Koyoharu Gotouge, which saw a TV anime series adaptation in 2019. It is scheduled to be released in the west early 2021.
