#Demon Slayer: Mugen Train Anime Film Up 39% at Japanese Box Office in 25th Week

The Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train just keeps on chugging along, increasing its domestic box office revenue in its 25th week in theaters in Japan as it speeds to the end of its record-breaking run. The Ufotable-produced film saw a 37% increase in ticket sales for a 39% increase in box office revenue thanks to a new Dolby Cinema run and new benefits for theatergoers.

In Japan, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train has brought in more than 39.40 billion yen (US$362.14 million) at the domestic box office, which means the film needs less than 600 million yen to break the 40 billion yen barrier; a barrier that no film in Japan has ever broken before. Oricon is reporting that fans are hoping to get the monumental film to 40 billion yen before Golden Week at the start of May. Mugen Train has also sold 28.57 million tickets. The box office revenue over the last week was 400 million yen. 

Around the world, Mugen Train has made US$414,385,913 (45,833,982,679 yen). It became the biggest anime film ever in Malaysia and Brunei and made AU$3,585,220 (US$2,768,307) at the Australian box office before falling out of the top 10 in the week ending March 31, and thus not being trackable. In New Zealand, Demon Slayer continued to be in the top 10, bringing in a total NZ$553,449 (US$476,758). South Korea continues to be the third-best market for Mugen Train with the film, as of April 4, bringing US$13,462,811 to the box office total on the back of 1,581,438 tickets sold.

Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train opened in Japanese cinemas on October 16 and had the best opening weekend in Japanese cinema history, becoming the highest-grossing film in Japanese theaters ever, and currently the second highest-grossing anime film and Japanese film worldwide. You can read our review of the film here. In North America, Mugen Train is scheduled to make its stop on April 23 both dubbed and subbed, with a digital release of the film on June 22.

The Ufotable-produced anime film continues to adapt the manga series by Koyoharu Gotouge, which saw a TV anime series adaptation in 2019. The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba TV anime series streamed on Crunchyroll as it aired. The second season of the TV anime series, subtitled “Entertainment District arc”, will premiere sometime in 2021 on Japanese TV.
