#Amazon selling Confederate costumes after Party City pulls from shelves

Amazon continues to sell Confederate-themed costumes following an uproar that caused brick-and-mortar stores to yank them from shelves.

The e-commerce giant’s website features listings for a smorgasbord of “Civil War”-themed attire emblazoned with the Confederate flag. Multiple childrens’ getups are modeled after Robert E. Lee, the Southern general whose statue was recently evicted, along with other Confederate monuments, from the Virginia Capitol in the name of racial sensitivity.

In the past, Amazon has sparked outrage over listings for a shoe with the N-word in its description as well as a T-shirt mocking the death of George Floyd. Both have since been scrapped from the site.

The news comes a week after Party City said it would remove two Confederate Halloween costumes from “all retail locations ASAP.” They were alerted to their existence after a mother of two black girls posted a Facebook pic of the controversial attire, which she encountered while holiday shopping at an outlet in Arlington, Virginia.

“The Confederate flag to me is a symbol of racism,” the woman, Caroline Brasler, said. “To have that out there for a child to wear on Halloween sends so many horrible messages.”

A Party City representative added that the store in question was a franchise operation and that the costume isn’t available at any of the company’s corporate-owned branches.

Nonetheless, the party supply purveyor pledges to “do better” at supporting “efforts in inclusion.”

“We do not tolerate racism or hatred of any kind, and we stand together in solidarity with our diverse colleagues, customers and communities,” said the spokesperson.
