Every year, Google breaks down the most searched terms for the past year for each country, and for 2020 it’s no different. For Japan, topping the list are the usual suspects from the current state of the world right now with “New Coronavirus Infection” and even the US “Presidential Election” on the top of the rankings, but sneaking their way onto the main ranking list was both Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and “Animal Crossing: New Horizons”, both household names not only in Japan but around the world.
Here’s the full list of the Top Google Trends of 2020 from Japan:

- 5. Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Not being content with being fourth on the top trending list of the year, Demon Slayer also tops the Japanese Film Trends of 2020 from Japan – no surprises considering it's on track to become the biggest film in the country domestic box office's history–, with Japan's love of horror films being on full display on the full rankings.
Top Google Film Trends of 2020 from Japan:

- 2. Parasite
- 3. My Neighbor Totoro
- 4. From Today, It's My Turn!!
- 5. The Confidence Man JP: Princess
- 6. Kaiji: Final Game

- 8. From Up on Poppy Hill
- 9. A Silent Voice
- 10. Midsommar
It seems, as with every ranking list the franchise qualifies for in 2020, unless it’s to do with the state of the world right now, it’s Demon Slayer coming out on top.
Google also released a quote emotional Japanese version of the Year in Search 2020, though outside some of the footage used and the inclusion of Animal Crossing, the video focuses more on trends that were in English-speaking countries than just Japan.
