#Democratic donors burn hundreds of millions on hopeless Senate candidates

Wow, did Democratic donors waste a ton of cash on Senate races their party clearly had no chance of winning.

Three Senate candidates broke their state’s previous senatorial fundraising and spending records — but only one, Arizona’s Mark Kelly, actually won. And he’s an astronaut and the hubby of Gabby Giffords, the popular former congresswoman horribly wounded by a deranged gunman several years back.

Meanwhile, Jaime Harrison raised nearly $110 million but fell far short in his challenge to South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham — making it the most expensive Senate loss in history.

In Maine, Sara Gideon raised close to $70 million in her campaign against Sen. Susan Collins, but had to concede after coming up far behind.

Donors also sent Amy McGrath $90 million for a run at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell — yet she still drew less than 40 percent at last count.

Of course, GOP donors also burned cash on hopeless causes: John Cummings, the Republican challenging Bronx-Queens Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, raised over $10 million — only to win less than a third of the vote.

Perhaps it’s a sign of the times that so many Americans are willing to basically burn money on fruitless opposition to politicians they detest. But Democrats flushed a lot more cash down the toilet this cycle: Maybe they should rethink their assumptions about the Republican base being a bunch of hopeless suckers.
