#De Blasio’s delay of Phase Two is the reverse of real leadership

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that New York City can start Phase Two reopening on Monday — but Mayor Bill de Blasio isn’t ready. Aaaargh!

All the scary metrics (deaths, hospitalizations, new cases) are way down. All the good ones (ICU capacity, progress toward “herd immunity”) are up. But de Blasio wants to wait to see the impact of the protests, which may have spread the coronavirus massively.

Huh? If he’s so concerned about the protests’ impact, why are the city’s contact tracers told not to ask if a corona-positive person attended one?

If the numbers spike up, there’s time to react. This shift isn’t that radical: Phase Two only allows outdoor service for restaurants and bars, along with still-socially-distanced retail shopping, professional services, etc.

But it’s a desperately needed chance for the local economy to start recovering. Everyone’s itching for it.

Yet de Blasio wants to “wait and see.”

Perhaps he’s just not ready? His own commissioners chafe at the lack of a cohesive City Hall message, let alone a plan. City Council Speaker Corey Johnson fumed to The Post that the “utter lack of foresight and vision has been a defining feature of the de Blasio administration’s response to this pandemic.”

Gale Brewer, the usually restrained Manhattan borough president, is pushing to reopen city parks and playgrounds, tweeting: “It’s not ok that some can afford to go to day camps upstate, while the kids in the city have to stay cooped up inside.”

It’s not just protesters and bar patrons defying City Hall now: Three Orthodox lawmakers invited the media to show them breaking open two Brooklyn playgrounds.

The entire city will soon be ignoring a mayor who seems in no hurry to lead.
