“#Cowboys help Eagles snatch Devonta Smith from Giants”
It was NFC East chaos on full display at the top of the first round in the 2021 NFL Draft.
The Eagles moved up from the No. 12 pick to the No. 10 by trading with the Cowboys, taking Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith with the pick – snatching him out from under the Giants’ nose in the process.
Dave Gettleman and company were rumored to be interested in the 2020 Heisman Trophy winner, and were slated to pick one spot later at No. 11. The Eagles, also hot on the Alabama product, wouldn’t take any chances – and the Cowboys assisted one division rival while screwing over another.
The Giants, with all three top wide receivers off the board, decided to trade back with the Bears, picking up an extra first-round pick in 2022 in the process. Chicago selected Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields.
The Giants could still land a wide receiver later in the first round, and also gained pick No. 164 in 2021’s draft in the process, as well as a fourth-rounder in 2022.
Giants fans likely got flashbacks to Week 17 of the 2020 season, when the Eagles infamously benched Jalen Hurts in the second half and lost to Washington – eliminating New York from the playoffs in the process.
