#COVID-19 outbreak linked to San Diego gym that defied shutdown order

A San Diego gym that stayed open in defiance of a county public health order to shut down is now linked to a coronavirus outbreak, according to a new report.

“The Gym,” on Garnet Avenue in the Pacific Beach neighborhood, stayed open for indoor workouts even after the state ordered San Diego to close fitness facilities that operate inside, KSWB-TV reported.

It’s unclear how many people linked to the gym tested positive, but county health officials say an outbreak is defined as three or more cases from different households linked to one location.

The gym was ordered to shut July 23 for violating the health order — but they did not, Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s chief public health officer, told the station.

“For some businesses it takes a lot of actions to take place in order for them to do that,” Wooten said. “We work with them to close, and they [did close] on Monday.”

The fitness center will be permitted to reopen once all activities are moved outside, according to the report.

The business has not been issued a citation from the San Diego Police Department for violating the order, the station reported.

A total of 28,287 coronavirus cases and 552 deaths have been reported in San Diego County, while the state overall is reporting 492,934 total cases — the highest in the country, according to CNN.
