#Corey Coleman flashes first-round pedigree in eye-opening Giants practice

Highlights from Monday’s Giants practice:

Good

Blake Martinez continually draws the unenviable task of covering Saquon Barkley in 1-on-1s, offering the ultimate chance to improve his criticized coverage skills. He chased Barkley downfield and broke up an underthrown pass. “He is more than a downhill linebacker,” inside linebackers coach Kevin Sherrer said.

Bad

Graham Gano waited about 2 hours, 30 minutes for his only field-goal attempt of practice – and he missed for the first time in his week on the roster. It was the final snap of the day.

Caught my eye

Corey Coleman took the top off the defense twice, including once against top cornerback James Bradberry. Coleman is a tier below the Giants’ top three receivers but, as a former first-round pick playing for his fourth team, has a higher profile than the many undrafted receivers bidding for a roster spot. He has cut around the field with no hint of last year’s ACL surgery.

Medical report

Wide receiver Darius Slayton spent most of practice indoors and appeared on the field only to ride the stationary bike. Safety Jabrill Peppers, offensive linemen Spencer Pulley and Shane Lemieux, and tight end Rysen John left practice. Linebacker Ryan Connelly and fullback Eli Penny continue to train off to the side.

“We had a couple guys dealing with some craps,” coach Joe Judge said. “Darius wasn’t present in practice today. The trainers are dealing with him.”
