Commissioner Dermot Shea says NYPD ‘stands with’ George Floyd’s family

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea offered his condolences Wednesday, saying his “heart goes out to the entire Floyd family” — after speaking with George Floyd’s brother on the phone.

“On behalf of the entire NYC police department, the nation’s largest police department, we stand with the Floyd family, we condemn what took place in Minneapolis,” Shea said at presser conference, where Floyd’s brother, Terrence, was scheduled to attend.

Rev. Kevin McCall said Terrence was “too overwhelmed” to meet with Shea at The House of The Lord Church in Brooklyn Wednesday afternoon.

The city’s top cop, though, talked with Terrence on the phone and extended his condolences.

“My heart goes out to the entire Floyd family,” Shea said.

“I think this entire difficult period, it’s not the first, please Lord it’s the last, but it should be a wake-up call for this entire country for justice, to look in the mirror to work together about what we can do together.”

Meanwhile on Wednesday, the former Minneapolis officer accused in Floyd’s killing was hit with an upgraded murder charge, while three other ex-cops were charged as accomplices in the racially charged slaying.
