The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reportedly planning to institute a federal eviction ban for the remainder of the year due to the coronavirus.

Individuals making less than $99,000 a year — and couples pulling in under $198,000 — would be immediately eligible for the protections as long as they can prove they can’t make rent or would become homeless if they’re booted from their homes, a White House officials told Bloomberg News Tuesday.

The far-reaching move is unprecedented, but the White House told Bloomberg it believes it has the authority under a federal law that allows the CDC certain powers to prevent the spread of diseases like the coronavirus.

“This unprecedented action is further proof that President Trump is doing everything in his power to keep the American people safe and secure in their homes,” Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson said in a statement to Bloomberg.

Renters, while shielded from evictions, would still be on the hook to honor their contracts with their landlords, meaning they would still owe rent and would still be subject to any fees, penalties, or interest as outlined in their contracts.

The White House has allocated stimulus funds to help offset the financial blow to landowners, officials told Bloomberg. Residents who received a federal stimulus check earlier this year are also reportedly eligible for eviction protection.

The action comes after talks have stalled between the Trump administration and Congress on the next round of stimulus relief funding and as tens of millions of Americans face housing uncertainty due to the virus.

The Democrat-controlled House in May passed a $3 trillion coronavirus relief package that included $175 billion toward rent and mortgage aid, but Republicans have pushed back on the legislation, calling it too expensive.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday issued a joint statement calling on Republicans to support legislation to provide rental relief to struggling Americans to protect them from mounting debt.

“Right now, over 40 million Americans are at risk of eviction – yet Republicans refuse to recognize the needs of working families facing the accelerating threat of eviction and skyrocketing debt,” they said.
