Nike, MSCHF settle Lil Nas X ‘Satan Shoes’ lawsuit; refunds to be offered

Shoes were released in March as promotion for rapper

The company behind the Satan Shoes will offer to repurchase the customized sneakers from consumers, resolving a lawsuit filed by Nike Inc. after the footwear created a social media splash.

said it settled Thursday its legal dispute with MSCHF Product Studio Inc. over the shoes, which were released in March as part of a publicity campaign for rapper Lil Nas X.

“MSCHF has agreed to initiate a voluntary recall to buy back any Satan Shoes and Jesus Shoes for their original retail prices, to remove them from circulation,” Nike said in a statement.

“We’re thrilled with the way this case has been resolved,” David Bernstein, a lawyer at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP representing MSCHF, said Thursday. “These shoes were never about making money. MSCHF made these shoes to make a point about how crazy collaboration culture has become,” Bernstein said, noting that the shoe “appeared to be a collaboration with Satan.”

Nike said any buyers of the Satan Shoes who want to return them can receive a refund. The same goes for buyers of Jesus Shoes, customized Nike shoes that MSCHF released in 2019. Nike said it had not authorized and wasn’t involved in the products.
