Weeks after signing the richest contract in sports history — a 10-year deal worth up to $503 million — Mahomes, 24, became the youngest owner in sports with a stake in baseball’s Kansas City Royals.
“We are very proud and excited to have Patrick as our partner in the ownership group of this franchise,” Kansas City Royals CEO and principal owner John Sherman said in a press release. “Along with the rest of Kansas City, I have watched Patrick compete and come an extraordinary leader, both on and off the football field.
“He loves football, but he also grew up loving the game of baseball. We look forward to many years of a winning partnership.”
Mahomes led the Chiefs to their second title in franchise history in February, a 31-20 Super Bowl 2020 win over the San Francisco 49ers that broke a 50-year championship drought. It was the latest addition to a football resume that includes an All-Pro selection, an Offensive Player of the Year nod, and two Pro Bowl appearances in three professional seasons.
The 2018 NFL MVP grew up watching his father Pat Mahomes Sr. compete as an MLB pitcher from 1992-2003 for the Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates.
“I’m honored to become a part owner of the Kansas City Royals,” Mahomes said. “I love this city and the people of this great town. This opportunity allows me to deepen my roots in this community, which is something I’m excited to do.”
