#Chad Green’s struggles out of the bullpen doom Yankees again

Wednesday in Atlanta, Masahiro Tanaka told Aaron Boone the tank was on its way to empty and the manager called for Chad Green to face Freddie Freeman.

While the Second-Guess Crowd chimed in on the move, when a starter tells the boss he is tiring it is time to ring the bullpen phone. Even if Freeman homered off Green to win it for the Braves.

Friday, in the first game of a Subway Series doubleheader against the Mets at Yankee Stadium, only an insufferable contrarian would have second-guessed Boone who had another move with Green blow up in his face.

With the Yankees leading by three runs in the sixth inning of a seven-inning tilt, the first two Mets reached on singles against lefty Jordan Montgomery who had thrown 68 pitches. That brought right-handed slugger Pete Alonso to the plate and Boone immediately called for the right-handed Green.

Pete Alonso drove a full-count homer to center that tied the score and after Green got two outs, Dominic Smith and Jake Marisnick hit back-to-back homers that carried the visitors to a 6-4 victory that extended the Yankees’ season-high losing streak to six. It was Green’s second blown save of the year and second in as many outings.

“I like Green in just about any [situation],’’ Boone said. “I had a lot of confidence in Green at that point. Alonso had a great good swing on a 3-2 count.’’

As he did in Atlanta, when he flushed Tanaka’s outstanding performance, Green blew up Montgomery’s five-plus inning effort in which he allowed three runs (two earned), didn’t issue a walk and struck out six. The Mets didn’t get a runner into scoring position until the fifth when two errors on the same play by third baseman Miguel Andujar accounted for an unearned run.

While Boone was impressed with Montgomery’s outing having first and second with no outs and heading into the middle of the Mets’ order for a third time, it was time for Green.

“Great outing but maybe not quite as crisp for the first couple of guys even though not overly hard-hit balls against him,’’ Boone said.

Green also flushed Clint Frazier’s 2-for-2 day which included a two-run homer and three RBIs that contributed to the Yankees jumping to a 4-0 lead after two innings against Michael Wacha.

The Yankees threatened against former teammate Dellin Betances in the sixth when Frazier was hit by a pitch and Brett Gardner walked but the frigid Gary Sanchez flied to left and lowered his season’s batting average to .133 (10-for-75).

The home run bug is new for Green who didn’t allow a homer in his first nine appearances and has given up four in the past two. He gave up 10 in 54 games a year ago and nine in 63 outings in 2018.
