The grim forecast — which comes as the nation’s death toll soared to more than 155,000 Friday — notes there will be a spike of between 5,000 and 11,000 new deaths during the week of Aug. 15-22, according to Yahoo.com, which obtained the CDC’s weekly projection model.
The CDC’s prediction flies in the face of President Trump’s continued assertion that the virus threat will soon end — and threatens to undermine his claim that the US has “done much better than most” countries on mortality rates, according to the outlet.
The CDC on Thursday reported 1,417 new deaths from the coronavirus in the US, including a total of roughly 60,000 new cases a day.
More than 1,500 coronavirus-related fatalities were reported in the US for Wednesday — marking the country’s worst single-day death rate since May.
