#CC Sabathia reveals the hard work behind his impressive ‘comeback’ look

CC Sabathia is training like an All-Star in retirement.

Many were shocked at the 39-year-old’s stark physical transformation after the Yankees posted a pair of photos on their Twitter account of the svelte-looking Sabathia working out with the team.

The lefty posted a 43-second montage to Twitter and Instagram on Wednesday, showing clips of his strenuous workout in the gym with an hourglass emoji as a caption. The workout included running on a treadmill, bench-pressing 80-pound dumbbells, doing different types of bicep curls and using TRX straps.

Photos that surfaced back in May on social media also showed the former Yankee looking very lean and muscular.

Sabathia playfully stymied the notion in a quote-tweet of the Yankees’ post: “Don’t call it a comeback ??.’

But weight loss hasn’t been tantamount to success for the 6-foot-6 flamethrower who has always carried a heavier stature. His lone Cy Young award came in 2007 as a member of the Indians when he weighed in excess of 300 pounds.

Ahead of the 2014 season, a slimmed-down Sabathia arrived at spring training 40 pounds lighter after a cousin’s death caused by heart disease motivated him to shed some weight. He ended the year 3-4 with a 5.28 ERA through eight starts and blamed his struggles on the weight loss and a nagging knee injury.

Sabathia, who announced his retirement in October, spent 19 seasons in the majors, 11 with the Yankees. He has a career 251-161 record, 3,093 strikeouts and a 3.74 ERA through 3,577.1 innings.

The response to his metamorphosis was overwhelmingly positive, with many egging Sabathia to come out of retirement, though there were some that questioned why he wasn’t as in shape during his career.

“Why you didn’t train like that when was an active player?” Instagram user @omyboy_31 wrote. “Im sure that condition will save your shoulder and your knee and for sure you’ve got a longer career.”

“Longer career??? ????? I played NINETEEN,” Sabathia quipped back.

“Am I the only fan mad here?” Instagram user @quinnzilla17 wrote. “This guy spent his entire career out of shape. He had a bum knee the last several years while making crazy money and now he works out?”

“@quinnzilla17 hahaha funny guy. Keep working little buddy,” he replied.
