#BURN THE WITCH Episode 1 Anime Review

The first episode of BURN THE WITCH’s three-part anime film is now available! With the show taking place in the Bleach universe, we travel to London that is filled with witches, wizards and dragons.

Crunchyroll is streaming the anime and describes the series as:

Historically 72% of all the deaths in London are related to dragons, fantastical beings invisible to the majority of the people. While unknown to most, some people have been standing up to these dragons.

Only inhabitants of Reverse London who live in the hidden “reverse” side of London can see the dragons. Even then, only a selected few become qualified enough as witches or wizards to make direct contact with them.

The protagonists of the story are witch duo Noel Niihashi and Ninny Spangcole. They are protection agents for Wing Bind (WB), an organization for dragon conservation and management. Their mission is to protect and manage the dragons within London on behalf of the people.

I already know who my favorite character is and it’s TRONBONE TAKKINEN.  I will even forgive the fact that the T’s in his name are made using trumpets.

That was a really fun episode even though it was only 20 minutes.

The wide variety of dragon designs is pretty neat. We range from cute doggo to faceless horror.

Besides the cool dragons, the exposition for Noel and Ninny was brief enough to learn of their motivations and overall personalities. One is in it for the money and the other for prestige.

So, Ninny and Noel are just magic park rangers, right? Like even their boss dresses in a green workman’s jacket and gardener’s gloves.

Now that I think about it, yeah. It feels accurate since they have to keep dragons in check.

I’m looking forward to seeing how the dragons are used throughout the series. From the opening scenes, you can see how dragons are treated as natural wonders, but can destroy you so quickly. The organization is set up the way it is with that historical 72% fatality rate.

Can you imagine if other places put their leading cause of death on their flag? America would have to replace the stars and stripes with a burger and soda.

It’s important to note that this is the dragon on the Arms of the Corporation of the City of London. The City of London is different from the Greater London area.

What cable package do I need in order to get BBC Reverse London?

It should be bundled in with your mandatory dragon insurance.

I loved how that was inserted into the anime. I appreciate the little details that lets you know that this is London, especially the way the street signs flipped.

All the world building has been pretty natural. The show has done a decent job of showing us how Reverse London is *slightly* different from the one we are all familiar with.

I liked the small touches on the architecture, especially the emergency spike gate and magic plates. However, Reverse London also has pigeon spikes on its lampposts, so there’s some familiar modern sights in this world.

I really like the background art. The way that plant life is drawn like a painting makes it look almost out of focus, which helps draw the viewer to whatever action may be going on in the foreground.

The brush stroke style was a great creative decision. There was enough detail but it wasn’t distracting.

Overall, I really enjoyed the episode and can’t wait to see the rest of the film.

BURN THE WITCH is now streaming on Crunchyroll.
